July 23, 2015, Washington, D.C. – The Egyptian Embassy held a reception to honor the anniversary of Egypt’s independence in 1952. This symbolizes the revolution led by Gamal Abdel Nasser – who later went on to become Egypt’s second president – to overthrow the monarch King Farouk and established a republic. The revolution was also the end of British military occupation in Egypt, creating a state by and for Egyptians. The event began at 6:30 with the welcoming of the guests. Traditional Egyptian food was served such as: Koshary (rice, lentil, elbow macaroni, chickpeas, onions, and tomatoes), shawerma (beef gyro), falafel pitas, and pitas paired with a traditional hibiscus drink.

Dr. Faruk Taban, President of the Turkic American Alliance and staff were present at the reception. There were many guests at the event including military and government officials from both Egypt and the US. At around 7:30pm, Egypt’s Ambassador to the U.S., Mohamed M. Tawfik, gave a speech explaining the importance of the day and the significance of the relationship between the U.S. and Egypt. He also expressed his gratitude for the Egyptian community in America. Ambassador Tawfik also expressed how sad he was that his term was ending and that it has been an honor serving as the Ambassador. After his speech, many people had the chance to meet and speak with him. The evening gradually came to an end at around 8:30pm.
