July 7, 2015, Washington D.C. – The 7th Annual U.S. Department of Agriculture and Health and Human Services was held at the Whitten Patio on Tuesday July 7th. TAA’s Senior Advisor, Murat Bakir, was one of the distinguished guests invited to the dinner. The Iftar celebration began with opening remarks from Max Finberg, director of USDA’s Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. Acacia Salatti, Director of US Department of Health and Human Services, then gave an introduction speech followed by the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance.
Dr. Gregory Parham, the Assistant Secretary for Administration of USDA, delivered a speech emphasizing the accessibility of basic health care services and food security for low income and poverty stuck individuals. Then, Dr. Karen DeSalvo, the Acting Assistant Secretary for the Department of Health and Human Services, delivered a speech on the mission and activities of HHS.
Lastly, Melissa Rogers from the White House Office of Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships Representative mentioned President Obama’s message and gratitude on behalf of the USDA Islamic Relief Iftar. A short introductory film of Islamic Relief was shown, followed by Anwar Khan, Islamic Relief CEO, spoke about the activities and current events of the organization. The speeches ended right in time for the fast to be broken.
