May 14, 2015, Staten Island, NY – Turkish Cultural Center of Staten Island held its signature annual event, the Annual Friendship Dinner for the 6th time. The event took place at the Vanderbilt, in South Beach on May 14, and brought together non-profit organizations, business owners, community leaders and professionals from all over the island.
The evening began with a reception featuring an exhibition and demonstration of Ebru Marble Art, the art of creating colorful patterns by sprinkling and brushing color pigments on a pan of oily water and then transforming this pattern to paper.Calligraphy demonstrations also drew much attention, as guests were able to have their names calligraphed as gifts. Following these demonstrations, TCC treated their guests with a performance from a Sufi Whirling Dervish.
New York City’s hard working councilman, Vincent M. Ignizio received the “Friendship Award” from Staten Island Mayor, James Oddo. New York City Human Rights Department Director, Dr. Demetrius Carolina received the “Interfaith Dialogue Award,” while the “Public Service Award” went to Leticia Remauro for more than 20 years of public service both in public and private sectors.
Dr. Andrew Skotnicki, who teaches Religious Studies at Manhattan College, gave the keynote address of the evening. In his speech, professor Skotnicki talked extensively about Gulen movement, as well as TCC Staten Island’s programs and activities.
