On Wednesday, August 20th, Pacifica Institute of Los Angeles hosted LAPD Chief Deputy, Michael Downing, as part of their Luncheon Forum Series to discuss “Policing Convergent Threats of the 21st Century”.
Chief Deputy Downing shared his insights on how the traditional role of law enforcement in the aftermath of 9/11 has “evolved to complement the role of national security”. To meet this challenge, he suggested a unique approach that combines public involvement with individuals’ ability to understand intent. Using these two approaches in addition to outreach and engagement, Chief Deputy Downing believes this would help the community, especially those that are “isolated, balkanized, or discontent”.
The Chief Deputy called for Americans to become more conscious of the world, maintain a sense of unity and responsibility through “community integration, motivating and inspiring through dialogue and discussion”. He shared his experiences on his frequent interactions and conversations with the Muslim American community in the past seven years. According to the Chief Deputy, “The Muslim American community denounces terrorism and violence, and ISIS does not represent Islam.”
In his closing remarks, Chief Deputy Michael Downing affirmed that parents and community leaders should do more to guide and protect the youth from news and media that could negatively affect their lives.
