On April 15th, the Turkish Cultural Center-Vermont and the Council for Turkic American Associations (CTAA) held a reception at the Vermont State House Capitol to mark annual Turkish Day celebrations. The event brought together Vermont Attorney General William Sorrell, Vermont Secretary of State Jim Condos, who were the keynote speakers, as well as Vermont state Senators and Representatives. Discussing his visit to Turkey in 2013, AG Sorrell praised the contributions and impact that Turkish Americans have made in the State of Vermont. In addition, he mentioned plans to return to Turkey in May 2014 to attend the Rule of Law and Justice Conference in Istanbul.
At the conclusion of the event, there was a live demonstration of Ebru art (water marbling), a performance by Whirling Dervishes, as well as a collection of famous Turkish art and photos on display. Ebru is a traditional art form that produces patterns created from floating color on water or viscous solutions. In most cases, flower figures such as tulips are popularly used shapes.
The Turkish Cultural Center-Vermont is a member organization of the Council for Turkic American Associations (CTAA), which aims to promote cultural awareness and engage in dialogue through annual friendship dinners, Turkey trips, and luncheon forums. CTAA is one of six member federations under the Turkic American Alliance (TAA), which is located in Washington, D.C.
