Major Turkic American Federations Unite Under a New National Umbrella Organization
The Assembly of Turkic American Federations is established as a broader umbrella organization for federations, councils and similar entities that bear the qualities and share the objectives of establishing closer relations with the Turkic American community and the community at large, as well as with the members of other ethnic communities in the United States. The Assembly is a non-government, not-for-profit organization headquartered in Washington, DC with the mere purpose of promoting cultural understanding.
Washington, DC (PRWEB) May 8, 2010 — Six major federations representing thriving Turkic-American community in the US are joining to form the Assembly of Turkic American Federations.
To mark this important development, there will be an opening gala reception in Washington, DC at the Willard Inter-Continental Hotel Ballroom on May 12th, from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm.
The host committee for this event includes prominent figures such as Honorable Senators Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Richard Lugar (R-IN), Honorable Congressmen Dan Boren (D-OK), Tom Cole (R-OK), Gene Green (D-TX), Ted Poe (R-TX) and Bennie Thompson (D-MS).
There will be live Turkish music, remarks, video presentation, exhibitions, and samples from the rich Turkish cuisine. The organization committee includes all six members of the Assembly; Council of Turkic American Associations, Mid-Atlantic Federation of Turkic American Associations, Turkish American Federation of Southeast, Turkish American Federation of Midwest, Turquoise Council of Americans and Eurasians, West America Turkic Council, and their agency Ocean PR & Media.
Since the history of the United States is one of immigration, American society has often been described as a ‘melting pot’ or a ‘cultural mosaic’. “American dream has attracted people from all corners of the world. Turkic American community who originally come from Central Asia, Caucasus, Anatolia and Balkans are certainly among them. The Assembly will promote Turkic-American community’s further integration and contribution to the US, as well as their constructive interaction with respective ancestral lands and the rest of the world,†says Dr. Faruk Taban, President of the Assembly of Turkic American Federations.
The Turkic American community became visible in the American Society after the 1960’s. From its early arrivals till today, members of the community have founded their organizations in order to preserve their own culture while helping newcomers with their integration process. New York, Virginia, Chicago and Los Angeles were amongst the first cities that attracted thousands of Turkish Americans and other people of Turkic origins.
As the 21st century approached, collapse of the Soviet Union and the economic reforms in Turkey after the 90’s gave birth to a new wave of Turkish population in the United States. Mostly academicians, doctors, and engineers, people from every walk of life pursued their dream by benefiting from tolerant, welcoming and friendly, as well as the prosperous American Society.
“As the local organizations founded by the Turkic American community grew in number, federations were formed to better coordinate their efforts. And with the increasing number of such federations, the need for an umbrella organization has risen. As a result, the community recently initiated The Assembly of Turkic American Federations for better coordination of the joint efforts among Turkic organizations all around the US,†adds Dr. Taban.
